Focus: Goodness
“You are not hidden
There’s never been a moment
You were forgotten
You are not hopeless
Though you have been broken
Your innocence stolen
. . . I hear you whisper underneath your breath
I hear your SOS, your SOS
I will send out an army to find you
In the middle of the darkest night
It’s true, I will rescue you.”
– Rescue by Lauren Daigle
The following story represents the common plight and compilation of many of the GROW children. Although it is not the story of a specific child, it could be the story of any one of them.
In a small, remote village nestled in the northern hills of Thailand, a little girl, we’ll call Mai, lived in the shadows of fear and neglect. For years, she had endured the horrors of physical abuse and emotional neglect, her childhood stolen by a cruel reality she could hardly understand. Mai’s family, living in extreme poverty, was unable to care for her properly, and her world was a constant cycle of pain, hunger, and isolation. Her parents, overwhelmed by their own struggles, had little to offer. The older siblings, too, were trapped in the same cycle of hardship and fear. Mai had no one and nothing to turn to, nothing except for the occasional glimpses of hope that would come from watching the other children in her village go to school or play freely. But those moments only served to remind her of what she was denied.

But GROW was founded on the biblical belief that every child is a precious gift from God, deserving of love, care, and protection. And yet the reality is far from this ideal for Mai and other Thai children. These children need to see the goodness of God and GROW has accepted the calling (Matthew 9:37-38). When Mai and other Thai and Khmer children come to GROW, they are given a home, not just a shelter. Faa speaks to them from the heart of God telling them that they are loved and valued. With compassion, she reminds them that their days of pain and fear are over. At GROW, they are offered a future of love, dignity and opportunity. At GROW, they not only hear but see the goodness of God. God is good, and because He loves us and promised He would never leave us (Hebrews 13: 5-6), we don’t need to be captive to fear. God is good because He said we can come to Him with all our concerns (I Jeremiah 32:17). God is good because He provides everything we need spiritually, mentally, and physically (Philippians 4:19). God is good because He is righteous (Psalm 145:17). He will always do the right thing. God is good because He is faithful (Lamentations 3:22-23). We can trust everything He says He will do. God is good because He has promised us heaven. He didn’t want us to settle for anything less than heaven, than Himself, so He sent His son Jesus to redeem us. The world is hard and many times mercilessly begging us to forget the goodness of God, which is especially true for children like Mai who have only known brokenness and pain. But thanks to GROW, neglected, abused, and exploited children are introduced to the love of God, His redemption plan and His goodness.

Prayer: Pray that God will work through the staff at GROW to help the children realize His goodness.
