12 Months of Prayer – Seeds that GROW Hope

Each month, join us in prayer for the children, staff, and supporters of Grace Refuge Outreach Worldwide (GROW). Together, we plant seeds of hope that God grows into healing, joy, and new beginnings.

June – The Power of Prayer

Prayer fuels every rescue and every victory. Each intercession moves the heart of God toward those in need.

Father, teach us to pray with faith and expectation. May every prayer move mountains in these children’s lives.

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” – James 5:16

Prayer in a “Secular” Culture vs The Prayer of a Christian

In SE Asia, prayer is an important part of everyday life. Whether in Buddhist temples, village homes, churches, or at spirit houses outside businesses and homes, people regularly seek spiritual help, protection, peace, and blessing. For the Christian, the heart and foundation behind praying are profoundly different.

For many Buddhists in Thailand and Cambodia, prayer often involves chanting, offering incense or flowers, making merit, and seeking peace, protection, or favorable outcomes in life. The focus is frequently on reducing suffering, improving karma, or gaining merit for a better future existence. In animistic traditions, prayers and offerings are commonly directed toward spirits believed to influence daily life, health, harvests, safety, or misfortune. Fear often plays a significant role, as people seek to appease spirits or avoid spiritual harm.

Christian prayer, however, is rooted not in fear, karma, or earning favor, but in relationship. Christians pray to the one true and living God who created the world and lovingly invites people into fellowship with Him through Jesus Christ. Prayer is not an attempt to balance spiritual scales, gain merit, or appease unseen powers. It is a child speaking to a loving Father. Prayer becomes an expression of trust, worship, dependence, confession, thanksgiving, and intimacy with God.

Another key difference is the motivation behind prayer. In Buddhist and animistic settings, prayer may often center on avoiding suffering, obtaining protection, or securing blessing. Christian prayer certainly includes bringing needs before God, but its deepest purpose is knowing Him, becoming more like Christ, and aligning one’s heart with His will. Christians pray not only for provision and safety, but also for forgiveness, spiritual transformation, love for others, courage, and the spread of the Gospel.

For many people in Thailand who grow up surrounded by fear of spirits, shame, or the pressure to earn spiritual favor, the message of the Gospel brings remarkable hope. In Christ, they discover a God who does not demand appeasement but offers grace; a God who does not keep people at a distance but draws near; and a Savior who promises peace not merely through rituals, but through a restored relationship with Him.

Lord I come, I confess
Bowing here, I find my rest
Without You, I fall apart
Your the One that guides my heart

Lord, I need You, oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
And where You are, Lord, I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

Lord I need you, oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
When I cannot stand, I’ll fall on You
Jesus, you’re my hope and stay

Lord, I need You, oh, I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

– “Lord I need You” By Matt Mahr

“Oh, God, I can never say thank you enough. I can talk to You with no shame because of Your forgiveness (Psalm 103:12). You love and have adopted me. You made me Your child (I John 3:1). Your kindness is never failing (Jeremiah 31:1). I can never be without You. I need You, oh, how I need You. I know there is no one besides You (I Chronicles 14:11).  So, I cry out to the name of Jesus, that has the power to change everything (Job 12 :13). God, many times I find this world to be hard and unpredictable; holding many uncertainties (John 16:33). I know I can’t navigate my days without You. You said I can bring You all my worries and concerns, so, Lord, I lay them before You (I Peter 5:7, Matthew 1:28-30). You said that if I am in need, You will provide.  I have seen You provide for me so many times, so today, I choose to trust You to provide again (Philippians 4:19). Today I must make choices, and I have no idea what to do, but I know that I can ask for wisdom, and You will give it to me generously. (James 1:5). I know that no matter what comes my way that You will be with me (Hebrews 13:5). So today, I am going to choose to walk in peace and joy because I trust You (Psalm 56:3).  ‘I love the Lord because He hears my voice and supplications. Because He has inclined His ear to me; therefore, I will call upon Him as long as I live’ (Psalm 116:1-2) because I need You Lord, oh, how I need You.”
