Focus: Protector

“Almighty fortress, You go before us
Nothing can stand against the power of our God
You shine in the shadow. You win every battle.
Nothing can stand against the power of our God”
– Battle Belongs by Phil Wickham

Danger! That’s a warning one needs to heed if you live in the world. In some cases, it becomes a reality way too soon.  Before living at GROW, a young teenage girl shared how she lived in constant fear. Her mother had run away. The man, she was living with then wasn’t even her father and often he would come home drunk and high on drugs. He would even invite other men to stay overnight. She had no one to protect her. She was desperate to escape her situation.  After she moved to GROW her emotions for a desire to be protected were triggered.  One day during an outing with several GROW girls, Jeana, the Executive Director, and her husband, Tim, encountered the unwanted looks and conversation of a man who was passing by. Tim stood his ground, arms crossed, chest out next to them and kept a protective eye on the girls.  For the first time she felt a father’s protective instinct. It was a glimpse of how God, our Father, cares and protects us.  It moved her to tears. “No man has ever protected me like that. I never experienced it before.”

God our Father keeps a protective eye over each one or His children. For only God has the power to protect us when we encounter the spiritual, mental, and physical dangers of this world.  God alone can overcome darkness (John 1:5). Corrie Ten Boom, a Christian, who lived in constant danger while imprisoned at Auschwitz concentration camp said, “Now, I know in my experience that Jesus’ light is stronger than the biggest darkness.” Throughout scriptures God tells us to “be strong and courageous, do not tremble or be dismayed for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) As children of God, you can be sure that wherever you are and whatever situation you are in, God is with you. He has promised that He “would never leave us nor forsake us.” (Hebrews 13:5-6) He will provide safety for each of His children. His word in Psalm 32: 7 says, “You are a hiding place for me; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with shouts of deliverance.”  He will be the protector that we, like the young girl at GROW, all long for. Psalm 4:8 “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.”

Prayer: Pray that the children in our care will come to see God as their protector and Savior.
