Sumitra (Faa) Choemue
Co-Founder and Country Director
GROW (Grace Refuge Outreach Worldwide) was founded when a young Akha hill tribe lady named Sumitra “Faa” Choemue decided to allow God to use her story. Her dream was to impact and change the future for children and families who experience abuse like she did.
From her pain to healing, her love for Jesus, and her supernatural love for children, GROW was born. GROW: a place where at-risk children are rescued, their broken lives restored, and where they are equipped to impact their families and communities.
Many children in SE Asia are in constant danger of abuse and neglect. It is estimated somewhere between 500,000 and 800,000 children are already caught in the child trafficking industry in Thailand. We believe the best way to stop child trafficking is prevention. That’s why GROW works in the communities that are most at risk. The children GROW rescues from abusive situations—which often lead to child slavery or sex-trafficking—do not qualify for other children’s homes. We literally take the children nobody else wants.
Thank God for the vision and dedication of Faa and her staff. Through her capable and Christ-like leadership, our children are safe, and their futures look bright. However, the task is immense: there are so many children that need to be rescued. GROW, with your help, can meet these needs. Heal
Children come to us without having basic needs met. Lack of shelter, food, clean water, and medical care put children at risk of being sold. It also makes ill the body, mind, soul, and spirit of a child. GROW works to heal the whole child by nurturing them inside the love of a family. Through our indigenous staff, we provide for their physical needs with healthy food grown on our campus, clean clothes, a real bed, quality medical care, physical exercise, clean water and more. We teach them how to protect themselves. We heal the mind through Bible-based counseling and healthy relationships. Healing of the soul and spirit comes through the teaching and the realization that Jesus loves them and has a hope and a plan for their future.
Restore
GROW teaches children how to have healthy relationships within a family setting. On our campus, children learn how to relate to others in a healthy manner. Restoration happens through healing and forgiveness, so GROW includes the families of each child in its efforts to heal and restore. Children have the best chance when their families can be reunited. Therefore, relationships are built with the families, and family training is extended to those who are willing. As situations improve, children can visit their families. Many of our children and their families reach a place where complete restoration happens, and they are reunited.
Equip
When a child moves on from GROW, whether that be through family reunification or from completing their educational aspirations, GROW works with each child to be equipped with both life skills and trade skills they can use to support themselves as adults. Currently we offer on-campus training opportunities in woodworking, agriculture, baking, barber/salon skills, store management, and in the future, hospitality and management. We have students in both vocational and university-level education off campus. It is our desire to see them equipped to impact their futures, families, and communities.

Our campus and our hearts have room for more children.
